Antique Pewter Ladle Having Turned Wooden Shaped Handle Initialed By Owner
Description: Beautiful antique pewter soup ladle having a nice turned and shaped wood handle. The ladle has a round and relatively deep bowl with a long handle. The handle starts with a pewter portion emanating from the bowl, which goes up about a third of the way then it changes to a shaped turned wooden portion for the rest of the way. The wooden portion has black with considerable wear showing the woo where the color is worn-off. The bowl itself has a shaped lip and concentric circles incised on its bottom. The pewter portion of the handle has the letters M. S.T. incised on its back. we believe these are the initials of the original owner suggesting this was a cherished piece in the owner’s kitchen where they marked it with their initials. See items 606 and 607 in "Pewter of The Western World 1600-1850" by Peter Hornsby and published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd in Exton PA in 1983 for a similar example. Date: Possibly early to mid 19th century but could be older.
Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was most likely made in United States.
Size: The ladle is ~15" long with the bowl being ~3 3/4" in diameter at the top. The ladle weighs slightly over 9 ounces.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice antique piece of pewter in very good condition, which would display very well in your collection.
Condition: This ladle is in good used condition. It has no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The wood portion of the handle has lost some of the black finish and shows the bare wood. The bowl is a bit distorted and slightly out of round. The piece has a nice warm gray age patina. It is soiled and could use a good cleaning, which we leave to the discretion of the new owner. The surface has a few minor scratches and the top rim of the bowl has a couple of minor nicks. Again, the top of the bowl is a bit distorted and is slightly out of round but all in all the piece is in good shape and looks great after being around for over 200 years.
