Old Unusual & Rare Small 800 Silver Stamp Box Unknown Origin Marked VII

  • $ 177.77

Description: Offered here is a small and rather unusual small silver stamp box. The box, which we believe is rare, weighs about 25.5 grams of 800 silver. The box is rectangular in shape with a hinged lid and remnants of gold wash on the inside. the exterior of the box is undecorated. It has a small thumb piece to help open and close the box. As is the case in all stamp boxes, the interior is rounded to allow for the recovery of the stamps stored inside. This was probably a pocket stamp box which was carried on a person to use while traveling. The box has markings "VII" on the inside of the lip of the lid and front edge of the box itself (see the last two photos). It is also marked 800 for the quality of the silver. The box is of unknown origin, but we suspect it maybe continental and is of unknown age but we suspect late 800s (late 19th century) to mid 1900s (mid 20th century). A great piece to add to your small silver or stamp box collection. Please view the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Size and Weight: Measures ~33 mm (~1 1/4" ) by ~25 mm (~1") by ~10 mm (~7/16"). The piece weighs about 25.5 grams or about 0.8 troy ounces.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful rare and rather uncommon silver stamp box, which would make a great addition to any collection.

Condition: The box is in very good condition with no breaks, or repairs. The inside shows signs of wear to the gold wash, but it is still in great condition. The hinge is intact and works very well. The lid closes tightly and is in very good condition. The exterior is free f breaks, and free of dings. However, the surfaces of the exterior show quite a bit of scratching indicating the box was used extensively. The inside of the lid is marked with a marker with the following "Rare Stamp Box; CH. TCO." This inscription was put there, we suspect, by the previous owner. Please see photos for additional condition information.
