Antique Dutch Brass Kitchen Hanging Box Repousse and Hammered Decoration Made in Holland

Description: A beautiful antique kitchen hanging box made of brass. This type of box was very common in Dutch homes in the 18 and 19 century. It is made of brass that has been hammered in beautiful floral design and also showing an arms surrounded by leaves on the front in what is known as repousse style. The top of the lid is also decorated with a repousse design showing a fan design, The sides of the box are hammered inwards in a geometric design. In addition the area surrounding the floral design on the top portion of the front has been lightly hammered to give it a textured feel and look. The bottom as well as the back of the box is undecorated. The edge of the top as well as that for the hinged lid are rolled. The piece is very well constructed and has been cleaned as is the custom in Europe with old brass items. The piece could probably use some additional cleaning but we leave that to the new owner. Date: Uncertain but most likely late 1830s.

Origin: Purchased in Amsterdam in the Netherlands where it was probably made.

Size: The box measures ~4" by ~1 5/8" and is ~1 3/4" deep with the back being ~3 3/8" high from the base to where the hanger is. The box weighs a bit over 3 ounces.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: These boxes where very common in Holland in the 18 and 19th centuries and were always used in the kitchen for various reasons such as storing matches, spices, or other small implements. This particular box is in exceptionally great condition given its age and would make a great addition to your collection of boxes, kitchen items, or brass implement.

Condition: Box is in every good condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has no breaks or repairs. It has scratches, small dings and soiling throughout. The box has been cleaned as it is the custom in Europe to clean brass items, but could still use some more cleaning if you would care to. The box has some minor spots of oxidation, which we believe can be cleaned. It also has some curvature along the edges and residue of cleaning agent at the corner.
