Antique English Cowrie Shell Pocket Snuffbox Snuff Box Pewter Mounted Hinged Lid
Description: This a beautiful antique snuffbox or snuff box made from a cowrie or cowry shell. The shell has been hollowed out and fitted with a pewter mount having a hinged lid. The piece is monogrammed with what we believe are the letters IF in a decorative cursive lettering. This small snuffbox is in excellent condition and rather scarce. The entire pewter mount is in excellent condition and has developed a warm gray age patina. The lid closes well and snaps in place without risk of opening. The box is relatively clean inside and out. The piece is marked with the word "LONDON" on the inside of the lid suggesting that it was made in England. We believe the box was made in the early 19th century or possibly earlier. The box has a paper sticker applied to the inside of the lid, most likely put there by the previous owner, which describes the box. A beautiful box in very good condition after being around for what we believe is at least 200 years. A nice addition to any collection. Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. We believe the piece was made in England.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: An interesting antique snuffbox in very good condition, which would make a great addition to your snuffbox collection or tobacco/smoking related collection. Condition: The box is in very good condition with minor dents, dings, scratches, and staining to the pewter mount. The shell itself is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. The box is all original with no breaks or repairs. The hinged lid works great and the lid closes and snaps in place as it should. The interior of the box has is lightly soiled as is the pewter mount, which has darkened from use. Be that as it may, these issues do not distract from the beauty of the piece. The box could probably use a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Just a nice antique snuffbox worthy of a spot in any collection.
