Antique Sycamore Wood Mauchline Box Transfer Carisbrooke Castle Isle of Wight UK
Description: Offered here is a Mauchline box. The box is made of Sycamore wood and has a hinged lid. The top of the box has a transfer of a photo of the Carisbrooke Castle in the heart of the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom. The box is lacquered throughout its exterior except for the base, which is covered with Moroccan paper. As usual the box has a brass hinge and a brass locking mechanism. It has its surface finish with minimum losses. The box, which is rectangular in shape, has bombe shaped lid as opposed to being flat. The interior of the box is clean, undecorated and is not lacquered, thus showing the natural wood. A great example of this type of boxes with a nice scene of a beautiful medieval castle scene in very good condition after being around for over 150 years. Would make a nice addition to any collection. Pleases carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Additional Information: Information gleaned from the internet indicate that "The Carisbrooke Castle sits high in the heart of the Isle of Wight. Carisbrooke Castle has been an artillery fortress, king's prison and a royal summer residence. Carisbrooke has been a central place of power and defense on the Isle of Wight for over 1,000 years. During that time, it has been a Saxon fortress and a castle of the Norman conquest, much remodeled during the Middle Ages and under Elizabeth I. Most famously, Charles I was held prisoner here during the Civil War, shortly before his execution. Since then, Carisbrooke Castle has remained a symbolic center for the island, not least as the residence of its governor."

The box is all original with no breaks or repairs. The hinged lid works great and the lid closes as it should.
