Antique Sycamore Wood Mauchline Box Transfer Ponce De Leon Hotel St Augustine FL
Description: Offered here is a Mauchline box. The box is made of Sycamore wood and has a hinged lid. The top of the box has a transfer of a photo of the Ponce De Leon Hotel in St. Augustine Florida. The box is lacquered throughout its exterior except for the base, which would normally be covered with Moroccan paper (this box has lost the top layer of the paper). As usual the box has a brass hinge and a brass locking mechanism. It has its surface finish with minimum losses. The box, which is rectangular in shape, has rounded sides to the top of the lid. The interior of the box is clean, undecorated and is not lacquered, thus showing the natural wood. A great example of this type of boxes with a US scene instead of a British scene in very good condition after being around for over 150 years. Would make a nice addition to any collection. Pleases carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but was made sometime in mid to late 1800s (mid to late 19th century).
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was make in or near Mauchline Scotland in the United Kingdom.
Size: The box measures ~3 3/8" by ~2 1/4" by ~1 3/4" and weighs about 2 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: An interesting antique box in very good original condition, which would make a great addition to your small box collection.
Condition: The box is in very good condition with minor dings and scratches. The box has lost the top layer of the Moroccan paper which would cover the base, other than that it is all intact with no additional losses. The transfer is all there with minimum losses if any. The hinge, which is a bit loose, is intact and works as it should as does the locking mechanism. The box is all original with no breaks or repairs. The hinged lid works great and the lid closes as it should. The interior of the box is lightly soiled but is still in excellent condition and would clean easily. Just a nice antique wooden Mauchline box worthy of a spot in any collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
