Collection of Mount Vernon Enameled? Box George Washington Crossing The Delaware
Description: This is what we believe is an oval-shaped enamel on copper trinket box. This box has a hinged lid that is nicely decorated with a colorful transfer image of George Washington crossing the Delaware from an engraving by Paul Giradet who made the engraving after Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze's painting in 1853. The box is navy blue on the outside and white on the inside. The inside of the lid has information about the scene on the lid written in detail (see 7th and 8th photos for details). The box has an oval flat base with rising straight sides. The bottom of the inside is undecorated. Both top and bottom are fitted with brass rings having a hinge on the back and a thumb piece on the front of the top portion. The inside of the box is also enameled and has a white coloring. The bottom of the box is also navy blue in color and is unmarked. The brass ends of both the top and bottom are clean, shiny, and add immensely to the beauty of this box. Although the box has no indication as to where it was made, we feel that it was made in England as it looks very much like a Battersea enameled box. Be that as it may, this is a very nice piece and would make a nice addition to your collection of small enameled boxes. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
