Old Primitive Handmade Wood Swing Lid Box 2 Compartments PA Dutch Decoration

  • $ 177.77

Description: Offered here is a handmade hand carved wooden box. The box is made of a hardwood and has a swing lid. The box itself appears to be made from a single block of hard wood that has been chiseled out to create two compartments and an extension at one end where the swing lid is attached. You can see the chisel marks very well on the inside of the compartments, on the exterior especially at the extension, and all along the edges of the box. The box has a flat lid with an extension to match the extension of the body of the box. That extension is attached the box's extension with an iron nail or rod and a washer under it. The attachment allows the lid to swing open and close. There is also a neil to the side of the extension near the top which is obviously original since it has remnants of the brown finish used all over the wood. The top of lid has carved decoration depicting two Pennsylvania Dutch style flowers within a double bordered circle one on each end of the lid. The lid is further decorated with a double border along the lid's edge with a scalloped line above it. The lid appears to have been made of an uneven board of wood as evidenced by the uneven edge at the short side. The entire exterior of the box has been finished with a brown shellac or colored finish while the interior is unfinished. The entire box is crudely made and rather primitive in its construction and decoration. A great and very unusual piece of primitive folk-art to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Unknown but examination of the box suggest that it is old possibly from the 1800s or early 1900s (19th century or early 20th century).

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size and Weight: The box measures ~13 1/2" at its longest, ~4 1/4" wide, and ~2 5/8" high to the top of the lid. The entrior compartments are ~4 3/4 by ~3 3/4" and ~1 5/8" deep for the compartment far from the extension and ~5" by ~3 5/8" and ~1 3/4" deep for the compartment closest to the extension. The piece weighs about 2 pounds and 3 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: An interesting and very unusual olde box with nice Pennsylvania Dutch stye decoration in good original condition, which would make a great addition to your wooden box collection.

Condition: The box is in very good condition with minor dings and scratches to the surface. It is soiled, shows some losses to the surface finish, and has some age cracks and natural wood cracks that are more than likely part of the piece of wood used to make the box (9th & 13th photo). Please read the detailed description within the body of the listing to appreciate the fact that it was made of a single block of wood that has been chiseled out to create the compartments and the fact that the slab of wood used for the lid that was naturally missing a small portion at the edge and hence the misshapen short edge of the lid (2nd & 5th Photo). The nail pf rod used to attach the lid and allow it to swing may have been repaired sometime in the past as evidenced by the fact that there is a groove suggesting a larger metal washer than the current one was used (12th photo), the repair evident at the end of the extension (11th photo), and the nail on the side of the extension near the top (10th photo). Be that as it may, this is a great and rather unusual box worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
