1924 Vatican Pius XI Large Bronze Medal Anno III Oratory of St. Peter Mistruzzi
Description: A nice and rather large papal states bronze medal with the image of the bust of Pope Pius XI who was pope in the period 1922-1939 on the obverse. The medal is the one of the exceptional papal medals. This is the medal for the 3rd year of the pope's papacy, 1924. It was issued to commemorate the construction of the Oratory of St, Peter Basilica. The obverse shows the bust of the pope facing left with the inscription "PVIS.XI.PONTIFEX.MAXIMVS.A.III" surrounding the pontiff’s bust along the edge with the notation MISTRUZZI and an olive branch below the pontiff’s bust. The reverse shows the front of the oratory with the dome of St. Peter in the background. There is the legend "PII P.P. XI.VOTIS.UT.SATISFACERENT.AD.ROMANAM.IUVENTUTEM.CHRISTIANE.EXERCENDAM.EQ.VITES.COLUMBI.AERE SUO." within a decorative foliate frame under the image. The medal is uncirculated with clear fields and retains a beautiful brown finish. This is a nice-looking large medal (weighs 150 grams and is ~70 mm in diameter) with great eye appeal, which would make a worthy addition to any collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
