1980 Carved Wood Painted Schimmel-Style Folk Art Lion Walter & June Gottshall
Description: A beautiful hand carved wood and polychrome painted American Folk Art Schimmel style lion standing on all four on a green colored rectangular platform and having a mounted tail curving above its back. The lion is colored in shades of light brown. It shows carving details in the eyes, mouth, nostrils, mane, feet, and end of its tail. The rest of the piece shows signs of carving that have been smoothed out. The lion is standing on a green colored base with rounded edges. The lion's mane and the end of the mounted tail show details of hair, while the rest of the lion shows carving marks. The lion has black eyes and a black mouth. The entire piece is carved from wood. Just a wonderful piece of American Folk Art to add to your Americana Collection. This piece is typical of the type of Pennsylvania Dutch carvings seen in Southeastern Pennsylvania. This piece is reminiscent of Wilhelm Schimmel's work from the 1800s. It was made by the Walter and June Gottshall and is marked on the bottom of the base "WJG/1980 #1" suggesting that this was the first of several pieces that were made at that time. Condition: The carving is in very good condition. The hole where the mounted tail was inserted has been very well closed and colored over and is not evident.
