Antique Pewter Lined Brass Snuff Box Hinged Lid Chased & Engraved Decoration
Description: Offered here is an antique (Late 19th to early 20th century) rectangular shaped pewter lined brass snuff box or snuffbox. This box is rectangular in shape with rounded corners and flat top and bottom. The top represents a hinged lid which has a chased design with a cartouche in the middle engraved with the initials RML. The bottom also has a chased design, but displays considerable wear. The box is rather heavy for its size weighing over 4.5 ounces. It fits nicely in the palm of your hand. It is dark on the inside, presumably from the snuff soiling the pewter lining. The box is unmarked as to the maker, The hinge is intact, solidly in place, and works as it should and the lid closes tightly as a snuffbox lid should. The box is all original and is in very good condition for being over 125 years old. A nice snuff box, which would make a nice addition to any collection. Date: Uncertain but was most likely made sometime in late 1800s to early 1900s (late 19th century to early 20th century) could be earlier.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The box was most likely made in Europe possibly England.
Size: The box measures ~3 3/4" by ~2 1/4 and is ~5/8" high. The box weighs about 4.6 ounces.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: An interesting antique snuffbox in very good original condition, which would make a nice addition to your snuffbox collection or tobacco/smoking related collection.
Condition: This snuff box is in generally very good condition with minor dings and scratches throughout. The hinge is intact, solidly in place, and works as it should and the lid closes tightly as a snuffbox lid should. The interior of the box is dark and soiled probably from the snuff soiling the pewter lining. The exterior of the box has a nice warm patina and is engraved with the initials “RML". The box shows considerable wear to the chased work on the bottom side and some light wear to the top. The box is soiled and has residue of brass cleaner here and there, which would benefit from a good cleaning to bring the box to its original beauty. The box is all original and is in good condition after being around for over 125 years. The box could probably use a good cleaning to bring its full beauty out, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner.
