1978 Carved Wood Decorative Duck Decoy By Earl Cheney - Newport Vermont

  • $ 49.99

Description: A beautiful carved wood decorative duck decoy. The decoy is carved of wood and has been nicely stained with brown colored finish and the lacquered. The finish shows the wood grain of the carving nicely especially on the sides of the duck. The carving does not, in our opinion, represent a known duck breed. Instead, we view it as a decorative piece meant to be used around your home. The decoy has a long neck with an elongated head showing a carved mouth and nostrils on the beak or bill. The duck has eyes that are made of what we believe is a composite and are yellow in color with a black center. The carving is well done and shows details of the wings and tail. The bottom of the decoy is flat with the signature of the carver. This is truly a nice decorative piece that is well done and signed by the artist. It would make a great decorative piece or a nice addition to your collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: The piece is dated 1978.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was carved in Newport Vermont.

Size: The decoy measures ~10" longfrom tail to bill, ~ 3 1/2" at its widest, and ~6 1/4" at its highest point. The piece weighs about 9 ounces.

Maker: Earl E. Cheney.

Marks: Has the notation "Carved By Earl E. Cheney 1978 Newport Vermont" carved in cursive calligraphy on the base.

Condition: The piece is in very good condition with some wear to the finish. However, the finish is all there and shows very little loss if any. The decoy's color is fresh and vivid with minimum fading. The piece is intact with no breaks, cracks or repairs. The piece has a few scratches, some dings, some scuff marks, and some dust within some of the carved details. It is a nice, solid, beautiful, with lots of character, and would display very nicely in your collection. The piece could use a nice cleaning surface treatment to bring its full beauty out, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Please see photos for additional condition information. In Closing: Please see photos to appreciate the beauty and condition of this signed decorative decoy. It is really a nice piece and deserves a good spot on your mantle, decorating your cottage at the lake, or in your decoy collection.
