1984 Carved Painted Wood Folk Art Schimmel-type Eagle By Walter & June Gottshall

  • $ 167.77

Description: A hand carved wood and polychrome painted American Folk-Art Eagle. The carving shows a Schimmel style eagle standing on a green colored domed base. These carvings are reminiscent of folk art carvings done by Wilhelm Schimmel in the mid to late 1800s in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. This piece was made by Walter and June Gottshall in 1984 and is so marked on the bottom of the base. The eagle is brown with black, yellow, and green highlights. Its head is off-white in color with black outlined eyes and a dark yellow beak having two black dots for nostrils. The eagle has two yellowish brown legs with talons holding on to the base. A nice piece of American folk art to add to your Americana Collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: The piece is dated 84 for 1984.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: Measures ~7 3/4" at its highest with the base being ~3" by ~2" and is ~~1 3/4" high. The eagle itself is ~7 1/2" long, ~2 3/8" at its widest, and ~2" at its deepest. The piece weighs slightly over 5 ounces.

Maker: Walter and June Gottshall. Marks: Marked "June/?(not certain what is written here)/Walt/84" in three lines on the bottom of the base (see the next to last two photos for details).

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice, very interesting, and unusual piece of American folk art, which would make a worthy addition to your collection of Folk Art pieces.

Condition: The carving is in very good condition with no repairs. The piece has minor scratches and minor dings. The colors of the eagle are fresh and vivid. The only issue we note is a chip to the bottom of the tail, which we show in the last photo. All in all, this is a nice piece of American folk art in good condition after being around for over 42 years. It would make a great addition to your collection. Because of the afore mentions chip in he tail, we are selling the piece AS IS at a fraction of its true value. Please see photos for additional condition information.
