1993 Hand Carved Polychrome Painted Wilhelm Schimmel Style Wooden Primitive Rooster Standing By Jonathan Bastian

Description: A hand carved wood and polychrome painted American Folk Art figure by Jonathan Bastian. The carving, which is reminiscent of Wilhelm Schimmel carvings of the 1800s, shows a colorful rooster standing with its head pointing up. The rooster is dark gray with black and white blotches throughout and red wattle and comb. It also has a yellow beak and legs and stands on a green base. The bird is made in the Wilhelm Schimmel style with the bulky body and primitive features. It is signed and dated in red colored paint on the base. The carving shows details of the eyes, the head, comb, wattle, beak, the tail, and feet. It is very well done and shows the marks of the tool used to carve it throughout. Just a wonderful and nicely done piece of American Folk Art to add to your Americana Collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Origin: Although originally from Kutztown Pennsylvania, Jonathan Bastian now lives and works in Virginia.

Size: Measures ~5 1/4" at is longest and is ~6" at its highest. The base measures ~3 1/4" by ~2" and the piece weighs a bit over four ounces.

Maker: Jonathan Bastian.

Marks: Marked in red coloring on the back of the base "JB 93."

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice and well done piece of Americana, which would make a worthy addition to your collection.

Condition: The carving is in very good condition, with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It does have minor scratches and minimal loss to the paint, with one small chip at the edge of the base which can be seen in the fifth and sixth photos. A great piece to add to your collection.
