Pineapple Butter Print, Antique Primitive of Carved Wood with a Serrated Border

Description: A beautiful antique lathe turned and carved wood wooden butter print. The butter print, which is made of a single piece of wood, has a carving depicting a stylized carefully balanced plant with a stylized fruit, which is referred to as pineapple. There are leaves and branches emanating from the base of the fruit and extending to the middle and the top of the fruit. There is also a tuft of vegetation on top of the fruit. The fruit carving is surrounded with a toothed or serrated edge all along the edge of the round print. The butter print has a knob like handle in the center with a flat top. The entire piece appears to be made of a dark softwood and has been finished with a dark brown stain. See page 137 in Paul Kindig's book "Butter Prints and Molds" published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd in 1986 for similar examples. Date: Mid  to late 1800s.

Origin: Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: Measures ~4" in diameter at the design part and is ~2 7/8" high. The piece itself weighs about 3 1/2 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very nice antique butter print with a nice and very desirable design.

Condition: The piece is in excellent condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has no repairs, or losses. The print itself has an age crack which can be seen in the photos. It also has some scratches that can be seen to the left of the tuft on top of the pineapple. There are some surface losses of the top of the print right at the edge,, which can be seen on the third photo at 1 and 8 O'clock. There are also some scratches and losses on top of the handle which are also obvious in the third photo. Other than that it has no other breaks, repairs or cracks.
