Antique Folk Art Single Piece of Hard Wood Carved & Polychrome Painted Songbird
Description: An antique hand carved and polychrome painted hardwood American Folk Art bird. The carving, which was whittled from a single piece of hardwood, are painted in brown, and yellow with green outlines of the wings. The bird has a relief carved wings, long flowing tail, simple painted accent, and wire legs. The bird in mounted in a simple stained plank base. the bird has white eyes and a yellowish colored beak. The piece is unmarked and shows some white coloring with associated surface roughness at the tip of the bird's right wing and the beginning of the tail (see last photo). Careful examination suggests and error in the painting rather than a repair of any sorts. The bird is truly intact. It is in very good condition with no observable damage. Date: The piece was most likely made in the late 1800s to early 1900s (Late 19th century to the early 20th century).
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The bird itself is ~5 3/8" long, ~1 3/8" at its widest with the base being ~3 3/4" by ~1 1/2". The piece is ~3 1/4" at its highest. The piece weighs ~2.3 ounces.

Condition: The carving is in very condition, with no breaks, cracks, chips, or repairs. The piece has no appreciable loss to the colors and is very nice looking. It has a few spots of color loss, some scratches, and a few dings to the surface. The bird shows some white coloring with associated surface roughness at the tip of the bird's right wing and the beginning of the tail (see last photo). Careful examination suggests and error in the painting rather than a repair of any sorts. The piece is solid and intact. A nice antique folk-art carving to add to your collection.
