Antique Primitive Sausage Stuffer Tin Body and Wooden Plunger

  • $ 67.77

Description: A very interesting and rather unusual primitive kitchen implement. This is a primitive sausage stuffer. The stuffer consists of a tin syringe shaped exterior and a shaped hard wood plunger, which fits well into the syringe. The plunger has a round knob shaped handle with a neck that progresses to the shaped body. The syringe has a long tip presumably where a sausage casing would fit. The ground seasoned meat would be filled into the syringe and then the plunger would stuff the casing. Just a great antique primitive piece to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain but most likely late 1800's or early 1900's, but could be earlier.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania where it was most probably made.

Size: The syringe portion measures ~12 1/4" long, ~3" in diameter at the top, and ~7/8" at the tip of the syringe. The plunger measures ~9 3/8" in length and the portion that fits into the syringe is ~6 1/2". The plunger is ~2 3/4" in diameter at the bottom and top. Thge stuffer weighs about one pound and one ounce.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Condition: The stuffer is in very good shape given its age and utilitarian function. The tin portion has a few scratches, some minor rust spots, some distortion at the end of the tip, but no appreciable dings or distortion to the body itself. It has lost the loop that was at the top of the syringe to hang from (The next to last photo shows the hole where the loop would have fit on the bottom at the edge of the syringe). The top of the plunger has a beautiful dark patina again indicating extensive use and has a few scratches and minor loses to the edge. The plunger body itself shows considerable wear and scratches and losses along the bottom edge all commensurate with extensive use and cleaning. All in all the piece is in very good condition after being around in kitchens for over 100 years. Please view photos for additional condition information.
