Late 20th Century Folk Art Bird Polychrome Painted Composition By John R Dierwechter

Description: A nice primitive polychrome painted composition sculpture in the form of a standing bird by John R Dierwechter. The folk art bird is standing on white rectangular base. The bird is yellow in color with reddish brown wings, black eyes, black beak, and black feathers on its tail. There is also black lines to show the bird's claws on the base. The base is stamped with the initials JRD. This is piece is made in the best folk art tradition of the Pennsylvania Dutch and mimics chalkware pieces from the 19th and early 20th century. Mr. Dierwechter who died in 1996, lived and worked in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. This piece was most likely made some time in the period 1960s- 1990s. Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.

Size: The piece measures ~3" by ~1 1/2" at the base, and is ~3 1/2" at its highest. The piece weighs almost 3 ounces.

Maker: John R Dierwechter. Mr. Dierwechte lived in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania and died in 1996.

Marks: Marked on the bottom with the impressed letters JRD.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice and colorful piece of American Folk Art, which would make a great addition to your collection. Condition: The bird is in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It does have some minor scratches and one minor spots of paint loss on the tip of the beak. The piece is also a bit soiled but all of these issues are minor and difficult to see. Other than that the piece is in excellent condition and looks great.
