Old Welsh Carved Wood Elongated Butter Print Tulip & Star Flowers Flattened Grip

Description: A beautiful antique turned and carved elongated or oval shaped wooden butter print. The butter print, which was most likely made in Wales England (Elongated prints are traditional Welsh designs), is machine cut and lath turned and has a flattened top grip. It has a central design of a tulip flanked by two star flowers all within a circle. The ends of the print are carved with oversized leaves that have chip carved accent. The piece is clean and very well made. This is a great looking and fairly unusual butter print in very good condition given its age and utilitarian function. See page 230 in Paul E. Kindig's book "Butter Prints and Molds" published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd. in West Chester PA in 1986. A great butter print which would make a nice addition to your butter print collection. Date: Unknown but most likely mid to late 1800s (mid to late 19th century).  

Origin: Purchased at a country auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The print was most likely made in England (Wales to be specific).  

Size: Measures ~8 1/2" by ~4 1/4" at its widest and is ~3 1/8" high to the top of the handle. The print weighs ~6.5 ounces.  

Maker: Unknown.  

Marks: Unmarked.  

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very good antique butter print with an unusual shape and a rather well executed design. A nice antique butter print, which would make a great addition to your collection.  

Condition: The piece is in very good condition given its age and utilitarian function. It is clean with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It has a few surface marks, dings, and rubbings at the edges and at the pointed ends. The piece has no appreciable wear to the design. The piece is clean and appears to have been used very little.
