Vintage Carved Wood & Metal Polychrome Painted Folk Art Yellow Perch Fish Decoy

  • $ 67.77

Description:  A very nice vintage carved wood fish decoy in the form of what we believe represents a yellow perch. The fish is elongated with a yellow color having a green back with green stripes throughout its body. This decoy appears to be carved of a single piece of wood and is painted in yellow, green, red, and orange. The decoy is carved to show the general form of the fish with a curved tail, a carved mouth, and a line delineating the head. The fins are inserted tin pieces that have been painted in red with black highlights. The fish has two plastic eyes. They are transparent with a central black spot. The decoy has what looks like a lead weight inserted into it on the bottom. It also has holes at the top edge of the top fin to hand from. A nice vintage decoy which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but most likely sometime in the mid 1900s (mid 20th century) or possibly earlier.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: Measures ~8 3/4" long, ~3 5/8" at its widest including the two long side fins, and about ~2 3/4" at its highest including the top fin. The piece weighs about 6.5 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.  Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice and very interesting fish decoy. A beautiful and nice piece which would make a worthy addition to your collection of fish decoys.

Condition: The decoy is in very good condition, with no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The piece has s few minor scratches, some dings to the surface, and some losses to the paint especially on the painted tin fins and the edge of the tail. The piece has minimum wear o the surfaces and paint losses to the body. The piece is also a bit soiled and would benefit from a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty. The only issue we see is the fact that one of the short side fins is missing (see first and next to last photos). Because of the missing fin, we are selling the piece AS IS at a fraction of its true value. Be that as it may, this is a truly nice piece worthy of a spot in your collection.
