Vintage Very Large Primitive Lathe Turned Flower and Fern Butter Mold

  • $ 150.00

Description: A beautiful and rather large vintage wooden butter mold. This plunger type mold has an engraving of a primitive stylized flower with two very different leaves. This is screw-in handle plunger butter mold. The mold appears to be lathe-turned and the wood has acquired a nice brown color patina over the years. It is made of a hardwood.   This type of decoration was common in these large molds. Please see Paul Kindig's book "Butter Prints and Molds" by Schiffer Publishing Ltd., 1986 in the section titled natural plants, specifically on page 144 for a similar example.

Size: This beautiful mold measures 4 1/2" in diameter and is about 6 1/2" in height, when fully extended. The print is ~3 1/2" in diameter and is 1" in height.

Condition:  This butter mold is in excellent condition given its age. It has a minor age crack in the print, which can be seen in the second photo. It also has a large age crack on top and the side of the mold, which appears to have been reinforced with a small amount of adhisive and an old break on the top of the handle as seen in the third photo.  There are a few scratches allover commensurate with its age. A worthy addition to your collection.
