  • $ 87.77

Description: A beautiful very fine or much better Banknote from South Africa. This is the South African Reserve Bank one Pound note issued 4 April 1944. The banknote is dark brown in color over a multicolored background. The note depicts the image of a sailing ship to the left of the front with people in various activities along the bottom and a factory with multiple chimneys spewing smoke to the right. There is a rising sun next to the ship. The back is brown and red in color and shows the arms of South Africa in the center. The note has a watermark showing the head of J. van Riebeek within the sun's disk. The note is written in English and Afrikaans. The front has one signature, the date and the serial number as well as the denomination. This particular note has the serial number A over 137 841977, which is displayed twice in black on the front. The back only displays the name of the bank and the denomination. Please carefully review the scans provided as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 4 April 1944.

Printer: St. Lukes Printing Works, London, England.

Size: The banknote measures 6" by ~3 3/8".

Pick Number: P 84e and is listed as B712e in the banknote book.

Condition: I would grade this banknote as nice very fine or better. The note has vertical folds and a horizontal fold. It has some light wrinkling and bumps at the corners as well as some rounding. The note has general soiling and a few minor stains here and there, especially on the back. It has no pinholes, no graffiti, no tears, and no splits. The note shows some light signs of roughness along the edges as well as some bumps along the top edge, but no losses. The corners are intact with some rounding and bumps but have no losses. A nice looking example of this scarce note to add to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
