1975 Turned Apple Wood Large Covered Saffron Cup Goblet Shape with Acorn Finial By Arthur E. Shupp

Description: A beautiful turned apple wood goblet shaped saffron cup with a tight-fitting lid. This wood cup has a beautiful brown colored lacquered finish showing the wood grain on the exterior. The cup has a round base with a short stem supporting a goblet like cup with a lift-off lid. The lift-off lid, which fits nicely and tightly to the cup, is slightly domed and has an acorn shaped finial in its center. The interior of the cup as well as the bottom of the base are smooth and un-lacquered unlike the exterior which is lacquered. This piece is made in the best Americana tradition common in Northeastern Part of the US especially in Pennsylvania Dutch country in Lancaster County. This a beautiful piece worthy of a spot in any collection. The piece is signed and dated by the artist on the base. Date: August 5, 1975. 

Origin: Denver, in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, USA 

Size: measures ~2 1/2" in diameter at the base, ~2 3/4" diameter at its widest point and ~5 3/4" high with the lid on to the top of the finial. The piece weighs ~4.5 ounces. 

Maker: Arthur E. Shupp. 

Marks: Marked with the initials "A. E. S." and the number "8-5-75" in cursive calligraphy incised on the bottom of the base with the word "apple" above the date, see the last photo. 

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is definitely a beautiful handmade large saffron cup with nice coloring and patina. 

Condition:  Cup is in very good condition with a tight-fitting lid after being around for 50 years. The finish is in very good condition with no losses. The surface has a few minor scratches, which are difficult to see and do not distract from the piece's beauty. There are several age cracks to the wood mostly in the lid and the finial as well as in the stem above the base. These can be seen in the photos. Regardless, the cup has no real breaks or repairs and is solid and beautiful. The piece is truly beautiful and would make a great addition to your collection of primitive Americana or American Folk Art. Please see photos for additional condition information.
