2001 Hand Carved Polychrome Painted Wooden Primitive Standing Rooster By Daniel Strawser
Description: A nice primitive polychrome painted carved wood sculpture in the form of a standing rooster by Daniel Strawser. The rooster is standing on a small green base with beak slightly open. The rooster is light brown in color with a darker brown and white highlights. It has white eyes with black pupils and black eye brows. The rooster has a red comb on top of its head and red wattles under its head. The rooster's tail is carved and highlighted with brown to mimic feathers while the sides of the rooster have brown painted wings highlights. This piece is carved in the style of William Schimmel, of Cumberland Valley, PA, who carved similar birds and animals in the 1800's. The bottom of the small green base under the rooster's legs has the letters "D. + D.S." and "2001" written in black ink on it. This is for Daniel and Donna Strawser and the year 2001. Again, this piece is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch wood carving tradition instituted by Wilhelm Schimmel of Cumberland County Pennsylvania in mid to late 1800's. This is a beautiful piece of Americana worthy of a spot in your collection of primitive wood carvings. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The piece measures ~10 1/2" at its highest and ~8" at its longest with the base measuring ~6 7/8"" by ~2". The piece weighs a little over 1 pound and 1 ounce.
Maker: Daniel and Donna Strawser. Of course Dan did the carving while Donna did the painting. Mr. Strawser, who is originally from Berks county, Pennsylvania currently lives in Bremen, Maine with his wife Donna.
Marks: Marked in ink on the bottom of the base D.+D.S. 2001 with a squiggle next to it (see last photo).
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice and colorful piece of primitive Americana, which would make a great addition to your collection.
Condition: The carving is in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It does have some minor scratches, a few minor dings to the surface, and some minor spots of paint loss. These however are minimal and are difficult to see. Other than that the piece is in excellent condition. Please see photos to appreciate beauty and for additional condition information.
