Antique German Pewter Two-Handled Lidded Porringer Reticulated Tab Handles
Description: Antique pewter porringer most likely made in Germany. The piece has two applied reticulated tab handles in opposite positions. The porringer is also equipped with a lid having three knobs or feet arranged in a triangular pattern on top of the lid. The lid is nicely decorated with a repeating pattern along the edge and as a defining border for a central circle on the raised center of the lid. The porringer has a round base with a recessed center and rising rounded sides ending with a plain rim. The handles are marked with a standing angel typical of old German pewterers marks This is an antique porringer from the mid-eighteenth century (mid 1700) similar to item 467 in Peter Hornsby's book Pewter of the Western World 1600-1850, published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd. in Exton, PA 1983. The porringer has a gray age patina, is soiled, has some staining on the inside, and residues of unknown matter. It is solid and intact and in very good condition after being around for over 250 years. It has surface scratches and some minor dings and minor cracks in the tab handles, which can be seen in the photos. Size: The porringer is ~4 1/2" in diameter ~3" high with the lid on, and is ~8 1/2" at its widest including both handles. The porringer weighs about 15 ounces.
