Antique Majolica Patterned Cake 11" Plate Man Drinking Beer with Yellow and Pink Colors
Description: A nice antique yellow and pink (or maybe light purple) round deep cake plate with a raised design showing a period man sitting next to a keg, holding a pitcher in one hand and glass full of beer with a head on top in the other hand. He is resting and actually leaning on the keg. The man is who appears to be dressed in his period sleeping cloth is also wearing a sleeping hat. He is sitting in a room with wooden floors and there is a window and a door behind him. Did he wake-up in middle of the night because he was thirsty and now he is having a beer?. The design is colored in pink or a light purple color and is in the recessed center of the plate. The sides around the design are scalloped and rise to a wide scalloped rim. The rim is colored in yellow and has a raised geometric design of lines and dots and has fan like shapes at the inner edge and raised fleur-de-lis shapes along the outer edge all connected with a raised line along the rim. The left and right side edges have a more elaborate design of multiple raised lines tied together and having rounded ends. The back of the plate is mottled in brown and off-white in a typical majolica fashion. Please see photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Late 1800's.
Origin: Uncertain but most likely Europe. Was acquired at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~11" in diameter and is ~1 3/4" high. The plate itself weighs 1 3/4 pounds.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and very interesting piece of Majolica that is in great condition.
Condition: The plate is in excellent condition with no cracks, hairlines, or repairs. It does have general crazing to the glaze throughout both n the front and back. It also has a few spots where there are some stains to the surface (see 10:00 o'clock and 1:00 o'clock in the first photo), which we are not certain if they are original to the plate or not. Be that as it may, the plate is beautiful, different and just in great shape. Just a great antique. Please view photos to appreciate the piece's beauty and condition.
