Antique Pewter Snuffbox or Snuff Box Manufactured By E R Walborg Rockford IL USA
Description: This antique (mid 19 century) heavy pewter snuff box or snuffbox made by E R Walborg of Rockford Illinois in the United States. The box, which is rectangular in shape, has rounded sides and is lightly rounded or curved on top and bottom. The box also has rounded corners. The piece has well-formed integral hinges and the lid itself has an extension to the front to allow you to open it easily. The box is undecorated and has smooth surfaces throughout. It has a silvery look to it and is rather heavy and feels great in your hand. The inside of the lid has the following inscription in raised lettering "15. HELGJUTEN MANUF. BY E R WALBORG. ROCKFORD. ILL.". The Swedish word Helgjuten, appearing on the lid and inside the box, translates as "cast in one piece," which refers to its seamless hinge. A great and substantial snuff box in very good condition after being around for over 170 years. Would make a nice addition to any collection. Date: Uncertain but was made sometime in mid to late 1800s (mid to late 19th century).
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was make in Rokford Illinois.
Size: The box measures ~3 1/4" by ~1 3/4" by ~1" and weighs about 4 ounces.

Marks: Marked "15. HELGJUTEN MANUF. BY E R WALBORG. ROCKFORD. ILL." on the inside of the lid and has the word "HELGJUTEN" in raised lettering on the bottom on the bottom inside the box.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: An interesting antique snuffbox in good original condition, which would make a great addition to your snuffbox collection or tobacco/smoking related collection.
Condition: The box is in generally good condition with minor dings, scratches, and staining. The box has two rather obvious dings on the bottom. However, the box is all original with no breaks or repairs. The hinged lid works great and the lid closes as it should. The interior of the box has is soiled and is soiled. Be that as it may, these issues do not distract from the beauty of the piece. The box could probably use a good cleaning to bring its full beauty out, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Just a nice antique pewter snuffbox worthy of a spot in any collection.
