Antique Turned Walnut Wood Domed Lidded Primitive Form Saffron Box or Cup

  • $ 97.77

Description: A beautiful antique lathe turned walnut wood lidded canister. The piece has a primitive form saffron box with a domed lid having a central finial that is, in our opinion, button shaped with a central raised circle. The piece has a flat circular base with a short neck supporting a rather large diameter and relatively short height cup fitted with the dome shaped lid. The lid has a thick wall and top thus is rather shallow. The cup is wide and deep (~2 1/4" diameter and ~1 7/16" deep). The cup has a rather thick lip or edge riser to accommodate the lid. The domed lid has a finial in the center and is rather shallow being less than 1/2" deep in the center on the interior while it is ~1 5/8" high on the exterior. This lath turned wood canister has a beautiful stained and varnished surface with a dark brown color showing the wood grain. The interior of the cup is not stained or varnished and shows the bare wood, while the interior of the lid appears to be at least stained. The piece is unmarked. This is an antique wood treenware primitive turning worthy of a spot in any collection. The piece is undated and was most likely made in late 1800s to early 1900s. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Unknown, but most likely made in late 1800s (late 19th century) to early 1900s (early 20th century).

Origin: Was purchased at an estate auction in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, USA.

Size: measures ~2 5/8" in diameter at the base, ~2 3/4" diameter at the top, ~5" high with the lid closed to the top of the finial, and the internal diameter of the cup is ~2 1/4" diameter. The piece weighs slightly over 6 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is definitely a nice handmade primitive antique saffron cup or box with nice coloring and patina.

Condition: The piece is in fairly good condition. The piece has no breaks, cracks, or repairs. It does have a few small chips, with the one at the edge of the lid being the most pronounced (see 4th photo). The finish is in relatively good condition with losses and scratches. It is soiled on the inside and outside with some minor dings to the edges and some roughness, mostly along the edge of the lid. Be that as it may, the piece is solid and intact despite being an old utilitarian saffron box. The piece is truly beautiful and would make a great addition to your collection of antique wood turnings. Please see photos to appreciate the beauty of the piece and for additional condition information.
