Antique Yellow Pine Wooden Primitive Candle Box with Slide Lid Red Wash Finish

Description: A nice and well preserved antique yellow pine wood primitive candle slide lid box. The box is made of what we believe is southern yellow pine and was possibly made in the southern USA. The box has an old red wash and linseed oil finish giving it a warm and nice reddish- brown colored exterior. The sliding lid has an extended grasp ear and a half-moon thumbnail pull. The box has a single dovetail cut in the center of the sides and a cut nail mounted poplar bottom. The lid is a simple constructed lid which slides through channels carved at the top oof the sides. The box is finished on the outside and not on the inside. The back of the lid has pencil writing in the form of numbers, which can be seen in the photos. This box has a very primitive form, but is still in very good condition after being around for almost 200 years. Date: Unknown but most likely early to mid-1800s (early to mid-19th century).

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The box was most likely made in the southern US.

Size: Measures ~11" by ~6 1/8" by ~3 3/4" on the exterior. The piece weighs one pound and 9.5 ounces.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice piece of Americana, which would make a worthy addition to your collection. Condition: The box is in very good condition, with no breaks, losses, or repairs. It does have scratches, dings to the surface, losses to the finish, age cracks and cracks in the wood around the cut nails in some spots, and shows the heads of the nails The back of the lid has pencil writing in the form of numbers, which can be seen in the photos. All these issues can be seen in the photos. The piece is a bit soiled, with some staining (especially on the inside), and dusty with some staining here and there. Be that as it may, this is a nice primitive slide lid box that is almost 200 years old and still in a very good condition. It is a worthy of a spot in your collection of primitive Americana.
