Late 1900s Folk Art Rooster Polychrome Painted Composition By J R Dierwechter
Description: A nice folk art polychrome painted composition sculpture in the form of a standing rooster by John R Dierwechter. The folk-art rooster is standing on a green colored base. The bird is off-white in color with black highlights and having red colored comb and wattle. The rooster's legs are yellow while his eyes are red with a black center. There are also gray lines to show the bird's plumage on the neck below his eyes. The base is stamped with the initials JRD within three rectangular deep impressions. This is piece is made in the best folk art tradition of the Pennsylvania Dutch and mimics chalkware pieces from the 19th and early 20th century. Mr. Dierwechter who died in 1996, lived and worked in Lebanon County Pennsylvania. This piece was most likely made some time in the period 1960s- 1980s. Size: The piece measures ~2 3/4" by ~2" at the base, is ~5 1/2" at its highest, and is ~4" at its widest. The piece weighs almost 8.5 ounces.
Maker: John R Dierwechter. Mr. Dierwechte lived in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania and died in 1996.
Marks: Marked on the bottom with the impressed letters JRD within three separate rectangles.
