Vintage Pewter Ice Cream or Candy Mold Rooster or Chicken Standing Marked S & Co 171

Description: A very nice and small vintage pewter ice cream or candy mold. When used, the mold would make a piece of ice cream or candy in the form of a rooster or chicken standing and looking forward. The mold is made of two halves held together with a hinge. The two halves represent the two sides of the form to give the three dimensional shape once the candy or ice cream comes out of the mold. Each of the two halves of the mold are equipped with short extension at the edge, which serve as thumb pieces to allow you to pry the mold open once the ice cream hardens. The inside of the mold shows the details of the shape. The inside of the mold is smooth and well defined. It shows the feathers of the bird, its eyes, wings, and tail. The design shows great details and looks rather nice. It is marked with the raised lettering on the exterior of one of the halves, which spells S & Co 171 (although the S is not very clear it can be inferred). The two pieces fit well together when the mold is closed and the piece is in very good condition with the rod in the hinge appearing to be a replacement but still works well. Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 20th century.

Origin: Was purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The base measures ~2" by ~1 3/4" and is ~3 7/8" at its highest. The mold weighs about 12 ounces.

Maker: S&Co. New York.

Marks: Marked with raised letters S & Co with the number 171 under it on the exterior of one of the halves.

Condition: The mold is in very good condition. The mold has no breaks or losses. The exterior of the piece is soiled, has scratches, dings, and dust which could probably benefit from a good cleaning, but we leave that to discretion of the next owner. The piece also has some general wear mostly on the exterior commensurate with its age and utilitarian function. The inside is clean and the design is intact and looks great. The shaft of the hinge is stretching outside of the limits of the hinge suggesting that it is not original to the making but rather a replacement rod.
