Vintage Salt Glazed Gray Colored Cylindrical Undecorated Stoneware Tall Jar

  • $ 117.77

Description: A beautiful nice size wheel thrown vintage stoneware salt glazed vintage tall jar. This salt glazed stoneware piece is undecorated, cylindrical in shape, with a round flat base. It has straight rising sides which end at a shoulder with an outwards flared neck ending in a flat plain rim. The jar is glazed inside and out with the outside being gray in color with hints of brown. On the other hand, the inside is a light brown color as does the top of the rim. The piece is obviously handmade and wheel thrown. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description.

Date: Unknown, but most likely sometime in the mid 1900s (mid 20th century).

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Lancaster Pennsylvania.

Size: Measures ~4 1/4" diameter at the base, ~2 5/8" diameter at the top, and is ~8" high. The piece weighs about 2 pounds and 3 ounce.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very well made and very nice typical Americana piece of stoneware. The piece has nice color, shape, and is in excellent condition. It deserves a prominent spot in any stoneware pottery or American pottery collection.

Condition: Excellent condition with no cracks, repairs, chips, hairlines, or crazing to the glaze. The only thing we see are a few manufacturing defects to the surface. There appear to be spots where the material popped during firing and left depressions, created crevasses, created scars that are dark in color possibly because of impurity in the clay or glaze, and roughness on the surface. These are all original to the making, which you can expect in such primitive pieces of pottery from the past. These can all be seen in the photos and truly do not affect the looks or the quality of the piece and give the piece great character. Finally, as is the case with all these primitive pottery pieces, the piece has an additional few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, unglazed areas, and uneven spots. A great looking piece in great condition after being around for a long time. Please see photos for additional condition information.
