Antique Clear Cranberry Glass Muffineer Sugar Shaker
Description: A glass antique sugar shaker or muffineer. This mold blown clear Cranberry colored glass has a nine sides flat base and nine flat sides. The straight sides are rising in an inwards slanted fashion to a shoulder having a threaded neck where a metal (most likely silver plated) cap fits. The flat sides are thin and the piece is rather delicate. The lid has flower or star shaped opening for the sugar to come out. The shaker is of thin delicate transparent glass and the molded pattern is just very well done. Please view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Historical Background: Popular during the Victorian era, muffineers (also called sugar casters or sugar shakers) were a regular part of a well-set table. The muffineer would be filled with super fine "caster sugar," for sprinkling over any food in need of sweetening.
Date: Mid to late 1800's.
Origin: Probably continental.
Size: 5 1/4" tall and 2 3/8" in diameter at the base and weighs a little over 6 ounces.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a beautiful and very nice antique, which is difficult to come by.
Condition: The shaker is in good condition given its age and utilitarian function. There are a few small chips to the glass at several of the corners of the base and one or two shallow small chips to the edges of the shaker. There is no cracks, repairs or hairlines. There is a few banged spots on the lid, but the lid is intact and great looking. It could probably use a good polishing job but we will leave this to the next owner. There is also a few air bubbles within the glass which are original to the making of the piece. Note how the piece is tilted to one side, which is original to the making of the piece and gives it character. In addition, note that the roughness at the top rim is a result of breaking the piece off the blowing rod after the piece was shaped. Be that as it may, these issues do not compromise the quality or beauty of the piece. The piece is all original and looks great.
