Antique Tin Pennsylvania Large Flat-Back Cookie Cutter Unusual Elephant Design

Description: An antique large flat back tin cookie cutter. The design is of an elephant having a short tail and a trunk in front of its head. The cutter's back is flat, with no handle and has several small holes for the air to escape. The cutter's is flat and has no handle soldered to its back making this a true flat back cutter. The flat back is slightly bent around the edge of the design showing the outline off the elephant's design. The piece shows signs of soiling as well as signs of rust. The design has a loose spot around the top of the elephant's head but it is still secure and solidly in place. A nice primitive design most likely by an itinerant tin worker. This is an old cookie cutter of a large and uncommon size with an rather unusual design. It will make a great addition to your collection of old cookie cutters, Americana positives, or Elephant related items. Date: Uncertain but most likely late 1800s to early 1900s (Late 19th century to early 20th century). 

Origin: Was acquired at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania 

Size: The cookie cutter measures ~6" at its longest, is ~4 3/4" at its widest, and the design is ~1/2" in depth. The cutter weighs over 2 ounces.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Nice, old, and rather unusual in size cookie cutter with a nice, unusual, and very desirable design, which would display well in your collection of primitives and/or cookie cutters. 

Condition: The cutter is aged to a nice dark gray patina. It has some minor rust spots on the front and back commensurate with the cutter's age and utilitarian function. The flat back also shows the outline off the elephant's design showing the design border on the opposite side. The design has a loose spot around the top of the elephant's head but it is still secure and solidly in place. The cutter appears to be all original a rather primitive rendition of an elephant suggesting workmanship of an itinerant tin worker. This is an old cookie cutter of a large and uncommon size with a rather unusual design. It will make a great addition to your collection of old cookie cutters, Americana positives, or Elephant related items. Please see photos for additional condition information.
