Antique Figural Pottery Humidor or Tobacco Jar A Jester With Dunce Hat

Description:  This is a very nice size antique figural humidor in the form a jester's head. The jester is wearing what looks like a dunce's hat decorated with a smiling sun and a donkey's head on the front and a cow's head and a bird on the back. The jester is wearing a ruffled collar. The jester has a nice colored face is beautiful flesh tone and has yellow colored pupils and dark blue center. He is smiling with his eyes wide opened. This porcelain or pottery jar is glazed in very vivid colors and shows great detail. The man is smiling; his mouth is open showing his teeth and red lips.  His hat is pink reddish in color and is set on his head with the point to the top and pointed ends on each side of his head.  The entire piece is made of pottery and the top of the hat is the lid. This is a rather nice antique Art Pottery Figural Humidor. Please review photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Mid to late 1800's.

Origin: Purchased in an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania as part of a large collection of figural Humidors or Tobacco Jars.

Size: ~4" by 4" at the base and ~6 5/8" at its highest.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Impressed on the bottom of the base the numbers "52" and "3648".%

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice old figural tobacco jar.

Condition: Humidor is in great condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has no repairs or crazing. It does have several small chips at the edge of the ruffled collar. In addition, the base has some soiling at its edge, which can be seen in the photos. Finally the piece has a tight hairline on the front of the piece above the left eye, which can be seen in the photos. However, the piece is solid and in great shape after being around for over 100 years.  The piece is great looking and very rare.
