Antique Louwelsa Brown Glaze Squat Vase By Weller
Description: A uniquely shaped squat vase marked Louwelsa Weller, imprinted on the bottom of the vase. It is a dark brown glaze blending into a lighter yellowish brown color with a beautiful floral design with green leaves on one side. It has flat base and rounded sides ending into a neck with flared sides terminating into a rolled rim. The flowers, possibly pansies or nasturtiums, are of brown and golden tones, surrounded by green leaves. The top opening of vase is round and flares outward. It is signed in faint yellow paint, which we are unable to make out.
Date: 1896 to early 1900's.
Origin: Fultonham, Ohio, USA
Size: 4 1/2" diameter at the base, ~7 3/4" diameter at its widest, 4 3/4" diameter at the top, and 5 1/4" high. The piece weighs 3 1/4 pounds.
Maker: Weller Pottery.
Marks: Louwelsa half circle mark "Louwelsa 5 Weller" and the impressed numbers 140 and 14.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very nice piece of art pottery. This shape is rather difficult to find and very seldom comes by.
Condition: Vase is in excellent condition. It has no breaks, chips, hairlines, or repairs. It has general crazing to the glaze. It also has a few spots where the glaze is lost, these are very small and do not distract from the beauty of the piece.
