Rare Flying Eagle 1857 Nicely Toned Copper-Nickel Cent/Penny Nice Good or Better
Description: A nice good or better copper-nickel Flying Eagle cent or penny. This is the 1857 issue, representing the first official year for this issue. The coin itself is better than the photos suggest and shows wear commensurate with its age and use. The coin shows a flying eagle with the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" surrounding it and the date below on the obverse. The reverse shows the denomination spelled out within a wreath. The coin has a plain edge. This is a nice-looking coin and shows a beautiful design with no detectable problems. These coins were designed by James Longacre and are becoming difficult to obtain in such a nice grade. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: 1857.
Mint: Philadelphia.
Size and weight: The coin is ~4.2 grams of a copper-nickel alloy and is 19 mm in diameter.
References: It is KM# 85 and is listed on page 109 in "2023 US Coin R. S. Yeoman (The Official Red Book), 76th edition, Jeff Garrett, Senior Editor, Published by Whitman Publishing, LLC, Atlanta, GA." Condition: I would grade the coin as a nice good or better. The coin shows good details of the eagle's head but has lost the details of the feathers in the wings and tail. It also shows details of the head and the talons but no details of the feathers in the body. The lettering on the reverse has lost quite a bit of its detail but is still legible. The wreath lost much of its detail and is smoothed through and through. The coin is toned with darkness along the edges especially on the reverse. It is problem free and still looks nice. These coins are becoming rather difficult to find. Please see photos to appreciate the beauty of the coin and for additional condition information.
