  • $ 147.77

Description: A beautiful bronze papal medal from the sixth year of pope Pius V papacy. The medal commemorates the consecration of the Church of the Holy Cross in Bosco Marengo or Boscomarengo in 1571. The medal which is a restrike most likely dating from the late 1820s shows the bust of the pontiff facing left with the legend "PIVS V.PONT.OPT.MAX.ANNO VI" surrounding the bust along the edge. The reverse shows a beautiful image of a church with a cross on top surrounded by rays and having the legend "BOSCHEN.SANCTF CRVCIS.ORDINIS PREDICATORVM*" surrounding the image of the church along the edge. There is also the date MDLXXI (1571 AD) in raised lettering below the church. The obverse has the letter "F.P." below the pontiff's bust. The medal weighs ~31.8 grams and measures ~35 mm in diameter. The medal has a plain edge with no markings and a beaded border on both sides. The medal is attributed to Gianfederico Bonzagni as engraver. This is a beautiful nicely toned medal with a nice portrait of the Pontiff. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Condition: I would grade the medal as uncirculated condition with no observable wear and great eye appeal. The medal is darkly toned on both obverse and reverse. The image of the pope is in high relief and is great looking with no observable wear and great preservation of the details. The details of the scene on the reverse including the details of building are also very well preserved and look great. A beautiful medal which is over 100 years old and still in great condition. It would make a nice addition to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
