1591 Vatican Bronze Medal Pope Innocent IX AN I Jesus Washing Disciples Feet

  • $ 327.77

Description: A beautiful and rather scarce bronze medal issued by the Vatican. This is a papal state bronze medal posthumously issued after Pope Innocent IX three month as pope. Innocent IX was pope in the period October 29, 1591 through December 30, 1591. Only two medals were issued during his papacy. The one presented here was issued after he died. The medal shows the image of the bust of Pope Innocent IX facing right on the obverse. The reverse shows the image of Jesus washing the feet of a Disciple with a sun shining over them. The obverse shows the bust of the pope wearing a decorated collar facing right with the inscription "INOCENT.IX.PONT.MAX.AN.I" along the edge surrounding the pontiff's bust. The reverse has a legend "TV.DOMINVS.ET.MAGITER" in exergue. A beautiful early restrike papal medal. The medal is nicely toned in a nice brown color with very nice eye appeal. The edge of the medal is unmarked and shows filling marks. A nice-looking medal, which would make a worthy addition to any collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain but most likely late 1700s to mid 1800s.

Origin: Vatican.

Artist: Niccolo De Bonis.

Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~10.4 grams and is ~29.5 millimeters in diameter.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Reference: Lincoln 839 and is not listed in Mazio.

Condition: The medal is in what I would characterize as about uncirculated condition with nice brown toning. The medal shows minimum wear with no appreciable scratching and minimum marking to the surface. The edge of the medal is plain and shows filling marks, suggesting an early restrike. A nice medal, which would make a great addition to your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of the piece.
