1899 Gilt Bronze Medal Admiral Dewey Laying Cornerstone Government Bldg. Chicago

  • $ 67.77

Description: A nice gilt bronze medal. The medal depicts the bust of Admiral Dewey on the obverse looking to the right with the text "ADMIRAL DEWEY" along the edge surrounding his image. The reverse shows the image of a large building with a central dome. The reverse has the legend "LAYING OF CORNER STONE" along the edge above the building and the legend "NEW GOVERMENT BUILDING CHICAGO OCTOBER 9TH 1899" in three lines in exergue (Note the misspelled Government in the legend). The medal has a plain edge with no markings. A great medal to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1899.

Origin: United States.

Artist: Unknown.

Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~23.8 grams, is ~38 millimeters in diameter, and ~2.5 millimeters thick at the edge.

Maker: Unknown.

Reference: We were unable to find the medal in any of our references and were unable to find a medal with the same reverse on line.

Marks: Unmarked.

Condition: The medal is in excellent condition and I would grade it as extremely fine or better. The medal was obviously mounted on a ribbon with a clasp attachment, which left a mark on the top of the medal on both sides and can be seen in the photos. The medal has observable wear to the high points with minimum surface marks and scratches. It is clean and intact with a minimum blemish. The surface has lost some of the gilt throughout. Be that as it may, this is a great looking medal, which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of the piece.
