1902 Portrait Bronze Medal Victor Hugo Centennial Paris Municipality by Chaplain

Description: A fabulous portrait bronze art medal depicting the head of Victor Hugo. Hugo is the famous French poet and author well known for his novels "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" and "Les Miserables". Born in 1802, This portrait medal was issued in 1902 to commemorate his 100th birthday. The obverse shows a beautiful image of a young Hugo facing right flanked by the words "V HUGO 1802-1885" and the name J. C. Chaplain below the bust. The reverse shows and elaborate rendition of the coat of arms of the municipality of Paris France with the words "CENTENAIRE.DE.V.HUGO" above it and the words "MUNICIPALITE.DE.PARIS" below it with the dates 1802 and 1902 flanking it. The edge of the medal is stamped with the word "BRONZE" and shows the Paris Mint Privy Mark of a Cornucopia.. A beautiful medal weighing ~54 grams and measuring 50 mm in diameter. The design is by one of France's well known medalists, Jules-Clément Chaplain. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Condition: The medal is uncirculated with rich toning a pleasing appearance. The medal shows no wear and has nice textured fields with minimum observable surface marks if any. A great looking medal worthy of a spot in your collection of French art medals, or portrait medals. The medal does have a small dark spot on the bottom of the obverse, which can be seen in the photos. The medal also has a couple of minor bumps to the edge.
