1976 Russell Henry Glazed Red Clay Deep Bowl Wood Cut-Slip Pea Vine Design

Description:   A beautiful glazed deep bowl with a flat footed round bottom with rounded sides ending at a plain edge or rim. The is decorated with what Mr. Russel Henry, the potter, characterizes as woodcut slip design depicting a "Pea Vine". The vine and pea pods themselves are brown sgraffito design along the sides of the bowl with a white slip emanating from the small flowers on the vine. The side of the bowl is glazed and is black in color. The inside of the bowl is also glazed and is brown in color. The bottom of the bowl is unglazed and has incised in it the name of the artist, the date, and additional information about the piece. A very interesting bowl with a beautiful and unusual design that would make a nice addition to your art pottery or Russell Henry collection. Origin:  Birdsboro, PA; Berks County, Pennsylvania USA   

Size:  The bowl measures ~3 5/8" in diameter at the base, and is ~2 1/8" in height. the bowl weighs about 12 ounces. 

Maker:  Left Handed Russell Henry.   

Marks:  Marked 10/76; "?H" (Back facing R and H) for Russell Henry; "HAY CREEK" for Hay Creek Pottery his company; "PEA VINE" Red Clay; at one spot of the base. There is also the following words along the foot of the base "LEFT HANDED RUSSELL HENRY; WOODCUT-SLIP” all incised in block letters along the edge of the base.   

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece:   This is a very unusual piece of Russell Henry pottery, most likely an experimental piece where he attempted new technique and designs. 

Condition:   The piece is in excellent condition with no chips, repairs, crazing or hairlines. The piece has a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive pieces of folk art pottery such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots. However, these are original to the making and are difficult to see and do not distract from its beauty or quality. Please see photos for additional condition information.
