Antique Colorful Majolica Covered Cake Plate or Dish Vine and Floral Design Over Brown Basket Weave
Description: A very nice and colorful antique (Late 19th or early 20th century) Majolica pottery Covered Cake Plate or dish. This glazed majolica piece has a light green vine raised design with light red flowers all along the sides of the cover. It also has a green design on top. The cover has a knob like finial to hold it. The design is set on a brown basket weave textured background. The inside of the lid has the usual purple coloring you see in Majolica hollow ware. The dish has the same brown color of the lid's background along the edges. However, it is a mottled green color in the center and the footed back. The dish has a depressed center so that the cover/lid would sit within it and does not slip out. Very nice and unusual piece is great condition given it is about 100 years old. Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Plate measures 8 1/4" in diameter and is 1 1/8' high. the lid 6 1/2 in diameter and is 5 1/2" high to the top of the finial. The entire piece is 6 1/2" high with the cover on the dish. The piece weighs 3 1/4 pounds.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and very unusual piece of majolica that is in such good condition after being around for almost 100 years.
Condition: The covered cake plate is in good condition with no cracks, hairlines or repairs. It has general crazing to the glaze. In addition, the piece has two chips, one on the edge of the rim of the cover (see 10th and 11th photos) and a small nick to the edge of the plate itself (see last photo). Other than that the colors are fresh and vivid and the piece looks great for being almost 100 years old.
