Large Bronze US Mint Medal James Buchanan Indian Peace Medal Dated 1857 UNC
Description: A nice large and heavy gold or brass colored bronze Indian Peace medal dated 1857. This is the US mint restrike of the Indian Peace medal issued in 1857. The medal shows the bust of President James Buchanan facing right with the date 1857 under it on the obverse. The obverse has the legend "JAMES BUCHANAN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES" along the edge above the president's bust. Shows a man in a 3/4 length coat and a hat leaning on a walking stick (a settler) standing to the right facing a native American standing to the left. There is an American flag in the back ground with the words LABOR, HONOR, VIRTUE above. This is a United States Mint restrike if the medal, which was designed by Salathiel Ellis for the obverse and Joseph Wilson for the reverse. The edge of the medal is unmarked. This is the US Mint medal number 125 and is listed by Julian as IP-36. The medal comes enclosed in the original plastic envelop, is wrapped in paper and comes with its original box marked 125. Condition: The medal is in mint state condition and it is uncirculated. The medal is still in its original wrapper and comes in its original box. It has no wear. It has what I view as beautiful brassy coloring and nice eye appeal. The box is soiled, has a few bumps, and a couple of small tears. A nice medal in great condition to add to your collection.
