Vintage Glazed Wheel Thrown Black Redware Tall Vase By James C Seagreaves
Description: This is a nice glazed wheel thrown redware tall vase made by James C Seagreaves. This black colored vase has a round flat base with sides that are bulged in the middle and end in a short neck supporting a flared top opening. The sides of the vase show the ribbing you would expect of a wheel thrown piece of pottery. The piece is glazed on the inside and outside as well as the bottom. The bottom is marked JCS for James Christian Seagreaves. A nice contemporary piece of folk art pottery by one of Pennsylvania best known folk artists. A beautiful piece of modern folk art redware to add to your collection. Please carefully view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely 1980s.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The piece measures ~7 1/2" high, with the base being ~2 7/8" in diameter, the top being ~2 1/2" in diameter and the piece being ~4 1/4" at its widest. The vase weighs about one and a half pounds.
Maker: James Christian Seagreaves.
Marks: Marked "JCS" on bottom in cursive calligraphy.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful piece of contemporary redware made by a master potter. A beautiful piece, which deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection.
Condition: The vase is in very good condition with no cracks, no repairs, no chips, no crazing to the glaze, and no hairlines. The black exterior color is matte and shows some spots where the glaze did not fully flow or where the coloring popped and you can see the color of the redware below it. These are small and hard to see except for the spot on the bottom of the base. These are all original to the making and truly are nothing of concern. The piece also has a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, small dimples, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots. However, these issues do not distract from the beauty or quality of the piece and are mentioned here for completeness. A great looking piece of folk-art pottery, that is 40 years old, in great condition to add to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
