Vintage Large Royal Doulton Toby Character Mug "Tony Weller" Wearing Hat and Bowtie

Description: This is a beautiful hand-made and hand-decorated large figural mug by the Royal Doulton Company. This mug is titled "Tony Weller." The mug depicts the figure of a typical cockney English man wearing a hat and a colorful bowtie. The man's face is colored in flesh tone and with red cheeks. The mug has an applied handle. The back on the mug has the word "Tony Weller" in raised lettering near the base. The bottom of the mug is marked with the Royal Doulton mark and has the letter "A" on one side and the number "3" on the other. The mug is nicely glazed and has very vivid colors. It has green, flesh tones, white, blue, grays and black. A real nice piece which is very desirable by collectors of Toby Mugs. Additional Information: Tony Weller comes from the Dickens book 'The Pickwick Papers.' He is the father of Sam Weller who was Mr. Pickwick's servant. The Wellers were Cockneys who shared their Cockney wisdom with everyone. Tony was a coachman and his wife Susan was the owner of the Marquis of Granby Inn in Dorking.

Date: This mug dates from the 1930's through 1940's.

Origin: England, Great Britain.

Size: ~5 1/2" high, ~6 3/4" at its widest including the handle, and the base is ~4 1/2" in diameter. The piece weighs about one pound nine ounces.

Maker: Royal Doulton.

Marks: Has an early Royal Doulton Mark with a crowned lion over a crown on top of a circle having four "D"s in its center and the words Made in England above and the words Royal Doulton; England around it. There is also an A and the number 3 on both sides of the mark. See the last photo for more details.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a real nice piece which is very desirable by collectors of Toby Mugs.
