Description: A beautiful about uncirculated bronze medal. This is a Comitia Americana medal commemorating the victory of the Bonhomme Richard commanded by John Paul Jons over the British frigate Serapis. The obverse of the medal shows the bust of John Paul Jones facing right with the legend "JOANNI PAVLO JONES CLASSIS PRAEFCTO. COMITIA AMERICANA" surrounding it along the edge. The reverse shows a naval battle scene with the legend "HOSTIVM NAVIBVS CAPTIS AVT FVGATIS" along the edge above the navel scene with the legend "AD ORAM SCOTIAE XXIII.SEPT.M.DCCXXVIIII" in exergue. The medal was originally designed by Augustin Dupre. This medal has a plain edge and was struck from U. S. Mint copy dies in the period 1875-1904. The medal is ~57 mm in diameter and weighs ~89.5 gm. A great historical medal worthy of a spot in your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Condition: I would grade the medal as about uncirculated with a nice coloration. The medal has a ding along the edge (see 6:30 on the obverse). The medal has all its details very well preserved with a minimum of observable wear. It has a minimum of observable surface marks and has great eye appeal. The medal may have been cleaned in the past but has re-toned since. A great-looking medal that would make a nice addition to your collection of US Comitia Americana medals.
