Rare Extremely Fine Silver Coin 1838 AD 1223 AH Year 32 Egyptian One Qirsh Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II
Description: A nicely toned extremely fine or better 1838 (1323 AH/Year 32) One Egyptian Qirsh or one Piastre silver coin. The coin, which was struck in Cairo Egypt during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II depicts the sultan's toughra on the obverse. The Toughra has the word "Adli" to its right and the denomination below it. The reverse indicates that the coin was struck in Misr (Duriba Fee Misr, current day Fustat on the outskirt of Cairo Egypt) with the date 1223 under it. The year 1223 AH is the year Sultan Mahmud II ascended the throne. The number 32 above the letter "Beh" in "Duriba" indicates that the coin was struck in the 32nd year of the sultan's reign or 1838 AD. This is a rather rare coin that is not listed in Karuse's Standard Catalog of World Coins in grades above XF. This coin is a very nice extremely fine or better and nicely toned example that very seldom comes by. It is KM 183, made of silver, weighs ~1.4 grams, and measures approximately ~19 mm in diameter. Condition: I would grade this coin as a nicely toned extremely fine or better with all the details being sharp and very well preserved. The coin nicely toned and shows wear to the calligraphy commensurate with its age and circulated state. It is much better than the photos suggest. It does have minor surface scratches, bag marks, and a few dark spots especially on the obverse, which can be seen in the photos. The coin is problem free and has great eye appeal.
