1678 Large Silver Coin Italian Papal State Piastra Pope Innocent XI Ann III VF35

Description: A beautiful and large silver coin from the Italian Papal States. This is the 1678 AN III Piastra, struck in the third year of Pope Innocent XI papacy. The coin depicts the image of the bust of pope Innocent XI facing right on the obverse with the legend "INNOCEN XI.PONT.MAX.A.III." surrounding the image and the name HAMERANO in raised lettering under the pope's bust. The reverse shows Christ calming the storm while in a boat with the apostles. The reverse has the legend "VENTI.ET.MARE.OBEDIVNT.EI" above the image. The coin is 0.917 silver purity and measures ~43 mm in diameter. The coin is graded by NGC as very fine VF35. It comes in a plastic slab and is so marked. This is the rather scarce Anno III variety. It is beautiful and has a nice portrait of the Pontiff with honest wear. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Size and weight: The coin is of 0.917 silver purity and measures ~43 mm in diameter.

Condition: The coin, which is a regular circulating silver Piastra, is graded as very fine 35 or VF 35 by NGC and comes in a plastic slab so marked. This example is the AN III variety which was struck in 1678 in Rome and Shows Christ Calming the sea in a boat with the apostles. It has a nice portrait of the Pontiff with honest wear and great preservation of the details. It is nicely toned and has great eye appeal. It would make a nice addition to your collection.
