Egypt Twenty Piastres

Rare Silver Egyptian Coin 1937 AD or 1356 AH Crown Size 20 Piastres King Farouk the First Facing Left

  • $ 260.00

Description:  A nicely toned, extremely fine to about uncirculated, rare 1356 AH or 1937 AD Egyptian twenty piastres silver coin. The coin depicts the bust of King Farouk the first (who ruled Egypt in the period 1936-1952) facing left. He is wearing a uniform and a fez and has the words Farouk the first King of Egypt along the edge on the obverse. The reverse has the words "Al Mamlkah Al Mesryah" (Kingdom of Egypt) in the center in beautiful calligraphy with the date in years AD (1937) and AH (1356), the denomination above it and surrounded with a tasseled wreath. This is a relatively rare coin with low and undefined mintage.

Date:  1937.

Mint: Egypt.

Size and Weight: This is a 20 piastres, which is approximately 40 mm in diameter and weighs ~28 gm of 83.3%25 silver. The coin has a reeded rim with the central beaded portion.

References: It is KM #368.

Condition: I would grade this coin as a nice extremely fine or much better. The details are all well preserved and readable and the coin is nicely toned. It is better than the scan shows. It does have scratches, bag marks, minor bumps to the rim, some stains along the edge of both the obverse and reverse, which can be seen in the scan, and wear commensurate with its age and circulated status. The coin may have been cleaned, but this does not distract from its beauty.  Please see photo for additional condition information.
